A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" comes from Latin "per centum" meaning "by the hundred." For example, 25% means 25 out of 100, or 25/100, which equals 0.25.
To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply it by 100 and add the % symbol. For example, 0.75 becomes 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide it by 100. For example, 45% becomes 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45.
Percentage change measures the change from an original value to a new value (direction matters). Percentage difference measures how different two values are from their average (no direction, always positive).
To increase a number by a percentage: New Value = Original Value × (1 + percentage/100). For example, to increase 80 by 25%: 80 × 1.25 = 100.
